The high-potential who wants a promotion now

With Priya Menon, Delivery lead. About 5 minutes, spoken.

The brief

You are practice director at a technology services firm. Priya Menon, a delivery lead, is your strongest senior: two accounts, every service level met, both renewed. She has asked for fifteen minutes about the title, and she wants it now.

Two people have raised how she works. In July the client programme lead at Lumen Retail wrote that her team was "told, not consulted" on a cut-over date. In August, in a shared-resource call, she overrode Florian Brandt's staffing plan without speaking to him first.

Promotions are decided only at the March and September panels. On today's record you would not nominate her. If the gap closes, you would nominate her in March, and Beatriz Costa, the vice-president, has agreed to sponsor a strong case. The firm does not counter outside offers above band.

Yours to decide

  • The lead for the Harbourline Logistics programme (starts 1 November: six months, fourteen people), with staffing and the client plan decided by the lead; spend above $40,000 stays with you
  • Moving the Lumen account to Florian from a date you set
  • Promotion criteria written with HR
  • Your March nomination
  • A spot award of up to $2,000 tied to agreed measures

Not yours to decide

  • The title
  • Any pay rise
  • Either panel's decision
  • Any response to an outside offer (the compensation team decides)

About 5 minutes. Talk as you would in the room. You can pause to think; say “let me think” and the counterpart will wait.
